A 10 mile or 5 mile road walk starting from Canvas Farm, Knayton, Thirsk on 7th May 2005 at 10am.

How to get to the start

The walk starts at Canvas Farm (on the map it is Canvers Farm) Knayton. GR 453892 Pathfinder 621 or Outdoor Leisure 26. Knayton is a village just off to the east of the A19 four miles north of THIRSK North Yorkshire.

The village is approached by southbound traffic from a slip road. Turn right into the village. Northbound and local traffic leave the A19 (signed Borrowby and Knayton), cross over the A19 Bridge and enter the village. Pass through the village (Dog and Gun pub on the left) and straight over the cross roads (sign post Cowesby and Kirby Knowle). After 1 mile on the left at a slight bend to the right you will see the sign for Canvas Farm. Turn left down the farm lane and park on the verge to the left or drive round the Farmhouse and park in the back yard.

The walk. 10 Miles Or 5 Miles. (For help ring 01845 537349 for a rescue car)

Leave the farm lane and turn left (east). Walk along the undulating road, past Shires Court, with views to the north of Cowesby, Kepwick and beyond to Black Hambleton. At the T-junction after the pond on the right turn right (south) along Ingdale Lane towards Kirby Knowle. Pass the Church on the right and keep right on the road to Upsall. Upsall Castle entrance appears on the left and we turn right, past the Grammar School and up the hill to North Farm. Here we have views to the northwest across Mowbray Vale. We descend along the road until we reach the Knayton cross roads.

Here, anyone doing the five-mile walk turns right to walk the 1-mile back to Canvas Farm.

Everyone else continues across until after crossing a bridge (watch out for Peacocks and Donkeys) we reach crossroads. Take the second road on the left (towards Kepwick). At the next junction turn right under the line of pylons along Ewe Leys Lane with the old track of a narrow gauge railway, from the Limestone works above Kepwick, on the left. After Kepwick Mill and Mill Farm turn right along a drove road towards Cowesby. As you enter Cowesby, the Churchyard where Claire is buried is on the left. Pass through Cowesby following the signs to Kirby Knowle, and at Brickshed Cottage turn right and return to Canvas Farm. Light refreshments will be available at the farm.
