Midwifery and Diabetes

What is MandDET?

MandDET is a family run charity. MandDET stands for Midwifery & Diabetes Educational Trust (Registered Charity No 1078059) and was founded in April 1999. MandDET's object is:

‘To advance for the public benefit the education of Midwives and other Nursing and Medical Staff, in the care and management of Diabetic Ante and Post Natal patients.’

Who Benefits?

  1. checkedDiabetic women during pregnancy and the post natal period and their babies, who have a higher risk of contracting certain illnesses.
  2. checkedIndividual midwives and other medical staff, who can be sponsored for specific training to help identify, prevent and treat problems caused by diabetes during pregnancy.

Fundraising

MandDET organises fundraising events to further its objectives – sponsoring lectures, seminars and the attendance of midwives and other medical staff on training courses and relevant conferences.

Why is MandDET necessary?

At most hospitals only a very small percentage of patients within maternity departments suffer from diabetes. It can be appreciated that when looking at continued training of medical and nursing staff, diabetes and pregnancy is an area that is not going to be a priority for the NHS’s very tight training budgets. MandDET is filling this financial gap by making modern teaching aids available, such as the presentation on this website ‘Diabetes and Pregnancy – information for midwives’ and by sponsoring lectures, seminars and the attendance of midwives and other medical staff on training courses and relevant conferences.
